Introducing Tacklehead Fishing's New "Boomer" Swimbait!
Fun Fact:
Why is it called "The Boomer"?
The Navy's ballistic missile submarines are often referred to as"Boomers"!
What is the Boomer Swimbait?
I grew up in Southern California and fished on Lake Casitas and Lake Castaic from the mid-80s through 2016. The big trout replica swimbaits are responsible for thousands of double digit bass, and they exploded onto the Southern California freshwater fishing scene in the early 90s. I began designing and building big swimbaits in the late 80s and it’s been my passion ever since. About 8 years ago I moved from Southern California to the St. Louis area, and it took me a few years to adjust to the different fishing conditions and fishing styles in the Midwest. I put the big baits away for a few years and I focused on learning techniques that I had not used in Southern California. One of those techniques that was new to me was flipping and skipping jigs on docks and lifts. I thought to myself, how can I combine the big fish catching ability of a big swimbait with the flipping and skipping technique that is so effective in our Midwest Lakes. After a few years of tinkering around in the bait shop, the Tacklehead "Boomer" Swimbait was born.
What makes the Boomer Swimbait so effective in our Midwestern lakes?
· The Boomer was designed so it could be effectively skipped under docks and overhanging cover. Its flat-sided design combined with the weighted hook staying flush against the body allows the bait to skip further and more consistently than any other bait I’ve ever skipped! This is incredibly valuable on lakes like Lake of the Ozarks and Table Rock where you might need to skip 30 or 40 feet back under boat slips and dock cables.
· We needed a swimbait that could pendulum down on a semi-tight line alongside boat lifts and vertical cover with a consistent tail kick and realistic swimming action on the fall. The way the Boomer kicks on the slow fall is perfect for fishing next to vertical cover and this unique swimbait presentation gets powerful reaction bites!
· Another design feature that makes this bait incredibly effective is the way the weighted hook fits flush against the body and conceals the entire hook (I built the 6” to fit perfectly on an 8/0 Owner Beast Hook) This gives the Boomer a stealthy appearance and an incredible ability to come through even the thickest cover. Through bush piles, over dock lines, through vegetation, you can throw this swimbait anywhere!
How can you fish it?
The Boomer is the most versatile swimbait I’ve ever fished! You can fish it exactly like a jig, skip it under docks, fish it next to vertical cover on the fall, hop it up off the bottom or slow drag it. You can also fish it like a crankbait by making long casts parallel to cover and a using a steady retrieve. It can be retrieved very slowly along the bottom and because of the weight placement it stays upright and has a very realistic appearance. One of the most effective attributes of this bait is the secondary action towards the middle and front of the body that results from the hard tail kick.
